Casting

During an interview with Alan Halsall, the actor revealed that he likes characters to develop in different ways. Halsall stated he enjoys the experience of the character's various relationships, especially as it differs with each one, notably his character's partnership with Molly's auntie Pam. The actor confirmed that he was pleased to see Tyrone involved in more storylines, feeling that his character was underused for a long period of time. He also claimed interest in the aspect of a wedding.[2] Alan Halsall contradicted statements that Tyrone and Molly were the new Jack and Vera, claiming it impossible for him to fill.[3] The actor revealed that he would be pleased to see Margi Clarke as Tyrone's on-screen mother full-time on the show.[4]

Storylines

1998–2008

The character arrives on Coronation Street with his mother, Jackie (Margi Clarke), in 1998. Upon his arrival, it becomes clear that Tyrone has been in minor trouble with the police. He is employed by Curly Watts (Kevin Kennedy) collecting trolleys at a supermarket but loses his job when he accidentally pushes a trolley into the area manager's new car. Following this, Tyrone trains as an apprentice mechanic at the local garage, Webster's Auto Centre, owned by Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell). After his mother abandons him, Tyrone moves into Jack (William Tarmey) and Vera Duckworth's (Elizabeth Dawn) bed and breakfast establishment, adopting a greyhound, Monica.

Whilst seeking a partner for Monica, Tyrone meets and began dating Maria Sutherland (Samia Smith), a kennel maid, and they became engaged in 2002. Fiz Brown (Jennie McAlpine), however, tries coming between them. Having ended his relationship with Maria, Tyrone finds himself better suited to kennel maid Molly Compton (Vicky Binns). Whilst they accompany Jack and Vera at Number 9, they plan to move out but buy the property when Jack and Vera decide to move to Blackpool. Vera, however, dies of heart failure in January 2008. Jack stays with Tyrone and Molly at Number 9 and the family atmosphere is soon enhanced with the arrival of Molly's aunt, Pam Hobsworth (Kate Anthony).

Jack, in an attempt to encourage Tyrone to propose to Molly, gives him Vera's engagement ring. Tyrone books a table at a fancy restaurant, but is upstaged by a much flashier proposal before he can pop the question. Several days later, Pam suggests that Tyrone put a ring in a decorative egg, which also has a voice recorder. When Tyrone opens the egg at Rovers, instead of a recording asking Molly to marry him, the voice is Kirk Sutherland (Andrew Whyment) asking how it works. Tyrone runs out in shame. Jack and Kirk follow, and Jack tells him that the moments that don't go as planned are often happier than the moments which do. Tyrone decides to try again, and returns to find a burger van decorated in Christmas lights and with a table in front. When Tyrone opens the egg to propose, Molly opens an egg of her own, with a recording of her saying, "Of course, you great nana."

The following month, Tyrone decides to visit his estranged mother. They discover that Jackie is £1,000 in debt and owes his father's friend money. Tyrone and Molly decide to help, much to their despair, as they plan to use it for Molly's wedding dress. Tyrone subsequently tells Jackie that she isn't invited to the wedding.

Tyrone's job is later in jeopardy with Tony Gordon's (Gray O'Brien) attempts to sabotage Kevin's business. As a result of this Tyrone decides to earn some extra cash by volunteering to test out products for a medical research company. Kevin then asks him to buy half the business, Tyrone later agrees and they are now co-owners so the garage can stay open for business. Tyrone begins selling knock-off merchandise with Pam, in order to afford to give Molly her preferred wedding.

2009—

On his stag night, Tyrone is roped into selling merchandise for Pam. Tyrone and Molly are married on January 12, 2009 after Tyrone has been arrested and hand-cuffed by 'Dave' in a pub en-route to the wedding. He arrives, albeit late, at the church but faints soon after exchanging vows. He later finds out that the police officer who has 'arrested' him is none other than Pam's ex, who had Jack, Kirk and Tyrone fooled into believing he was a real police officer. Nonetheless, the trio pay up to 'release' Tyrone under the pretext that Tyrone would have to hand himself in at a police station after the wedding ceremony.

Following their wedding, Jackie force the couple to allow her to stay, offering to help Liz McDonald (Beverley Callard) with the evening's work at the reception in the Rovers, and steals the couple's honeymoon tickets. Pam then suggests that they go to Blackpool instead, much to Tyrone's enthusiasm, but Molly's dismay. In 2009, Molly embarks on an affair with Tyrone's best friend Kevin after they do a fun run together. At one point Tyrone actually becomes suspicious of Molly, as she is always hostile towards him and always disappearing, but Kevin assures him that Molly would "never" cheat on him. Trying to cover her tracks, Molly accuses Tyrone on cheating on her with Minnie Chandra (Poppy Jhakra). In January 2010, after just one year of marriage, Molly announces that she is leaving Tyrone, leaving him confused and inconsolable. He mistakenly believes that Molly has been sleeping with her boss Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin), after she moves into the corner shop flat, and attacks him on the Street.

In March 2010 Molly returns and tells Tyrone she is pregnant. Unaware of her affair with Kevin he assumes that the baby is his. They decide to try to give their marriage another go. The following month Molly and Tyrone discover, after a 4D scan, that Molly is expecting a baby boy. The couple are subsequently involved in a car crash on their way to visit Molly's father Diggory (Eric Potts). Tyrone loses control of the car as the take a drive through the country. Luckily they both survive but are scared about the condition of their unborn child before being assured that he has been unharmed.

Molly gives birth to a baby boy, whom they name Jack, in September 2010, with Tyrone none the wiser that Kevin may be the baby's father. Tyrone's joy, as a result of fatherhood, is soon dashed when a month later Jack reveals that he has an incurable form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and only has weeks left to live. Tyrone is devastated as Jack has been a father figure to him throughout the years. When Jack dies peacefully on 8 November 2010, this leaves Tyrone in a bad way as Jack had been a father figure to him for some time. At his funeral, he gives a moving eulogy and later scatters his ashes.

On 6 December 2010, Molly reveals to Tyrone that she had an affair and that he is not Jack's father. Tyrone is devastated and turns to Sally Webster (Sally Dynevor) for help. He is concerned when Molly and Jack are trapped in the Corner Shop when a tram crashes into it. Over the 50th anniversary week, Tyrone accompanies Jack to the hospital, after the baby is saved from the wreck. Whilst there, Jack's biological father Kevin sends Tyrone back to the Street to check on Molly's situation. On 9 December 2010, during his arrival from hospital, Tyrone is left devastated when he discovers Molly has died, when Sally walks up to him crying and hugs him. Unknown to him, Molly had confessed to Sally about her affair with Kevin minutes before her passing, which Sally orders him to tell Tyrone as he doesn't deserve all the trauma and then packing his bags and throws him out and to never return. When Tyrone visits Jack in hospital, he spots Kevin and tells him that he will kill whoever tore his family apart.

At Molly's Funeral, Tyrone broke down while giving a eulogy and asked for support. Sophie prompted Kevin to go finish the eulogy, and a furious Sally cannot stand to listen and walks out of the church, leaving Tyrone puzzled, but after overhearing Sally and Kevin arguing, and putting two and two together, he discovers the truth about Kevin being baby Jack's father, and fists go flying towards Kevin, knocking him into Molly's grave which Tyrone should have been arrested and spent time in prison for. When Tyrone returns home, he asks to be alone, however Kevin's wife Sally later comes knocking at his door, with baby Jack. She persuades Tyrone that he is the only father Jack knows and that he should raise him as his own. Eventually, he agrees to this and takes baby Jack.

Tyrone can't cope with baby Jack not being his, so decided to hand him to Kevin as he is the baby's father. On Christmas Eve, he decided to make a fresh start by "getting drunk and going sober". Kevin persuaded Tyrone to keep looking after baby Jack as Tyrone was the only father he knows, but Tyrone said he doesn't want anything to do with either of them. Tyrone spent Christmas Day with Maria, Kirk and Liam Connor, Jr. On New Year's Eve 2010, he saw in the new year with Sally with him and Sally saying that 2011 has got to be a better year than the one they have had.

However, 2011 (so far) has been anything but better: A few days into January, Kevin learns of how they slept in the Webster household two nights in a row and promptly attacks Tyrone, cracking his lip. Then, in February, Tyrone and Julie Carp spend time together, but break up as they feel they don't love each other. In March, Tyrone is absolutely incensed when Kevin wins £200,000 on a scratchcard, feeling he has no right to deserve it, luck or not. Then, he tells Sally about the win and in return, she buys Tyrone a drink.

His year (sort of) improves when out-of-the-blue comes Jack's grandson and old friend Tommy Duckworth (Chris Fountain), looking for Jack: as a result, it's up to Tyrone to reveal about Jack's death in the previous year. The two bond, as Tommy moves in.

However, his life goes downhill in mid-May: on the 19th, Kevin orders a new hyrdaulic car ramp for the garage and promptly bans Tyrone from using it. The next day, when Tyrone sees Kevin sack Tommy (Tyrone had got him a job at the garage) from the garage and then head off on a call-out, Tyrone loses it and whackes the ramp with a 32-inch spanner 8 times, before storming to the Rovers. However, completely unbeknown to Ty, he took a swing at the hydraulic pipe right at its weakest point and breaking it. When Kevin uses the ramp, he gets stuck and tries to get the ramp to go up: however, due to Tyrone's meddling, the ramp goes down and whilst Kev stops it with a pipe, one side collapses and the car crushes Kevin. He calls for help and it is a horrified Tyrone and Tommy who rush to the rescue and pull him out, just as the ambulance arrives.

Tyrone, in shock, downs drink after drink in the Rovers and when he learns that the ramp was attacked diliberately, he puts two and two together and discovers he was the one who nearly killed Kevin. He is nervous for the rest of the evening and throughout the next morning, worried that Kev will find out. He gets Tommy to fix the ramp and he does at the garage with Ty watching, just as Kevin catches them. Tommy is blamed and Tyrone is forced to confess, to help his friend. Kevin is angered, but calls round Tyrone, in order to call a truce so they can work together at the garage. Tyrone, while he won't forgive or forget, agrees to the truce, as the garage is the only thing he has left, with the house.

So far, the truce at the garage has been good, but whether Kevin is frustrated or angry, Tyrone takes the advantage in winding him up. An example of this is when Kevin robbed of £20,000 from his bank account by Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent) and Kevin grows angry when working on a car, Tyrone and Tommy provide a commentary track, getting him to think of the people who scammed Sophie as the car he is working on and then Tyrone telling Kev that now he's got less money, he can think of new ideas.

In September 2011, Tyrone Dobbs and Tommy Duckworth when the lads headed to a bar in town. He paid an attractive girl to flirt with his mate and boost his self-esteem. But the young woman he hired, Kirsty Soames, actually enjoyed Tyrone's company and they swapped numbers. Elsewhere Tyrone was euphoric after his success with Kirsty. But Tommy felt guilty, and feared Kirsty was only nice to Tyrone because he'd paid her. Tommy wanted to come clean when Ty’s phone rang with a call from her. She arranged to see Tryone again, as she felt they could build a serious relationship. Soon, they fall in love and begin a relationship. However, the first time Kirsty tries to sleep with him, Tyrone panics after Molly's death and Kirsty becomes very patient with him, reassuring him that they can wait until he is ready. Tyrone is grateful to Kirsty, and buys her a new mobile phone as a way of saying thank you. Although he decides he loves Kirsty, he is stunned when she reveals she is building a career as a policewoman. Tyrone is both proud but nervous; as he has to supervise everything he says in front of Kirsty, in case she arrests him.

Tyrone is shocked when Kirsty warns him off Tyrone's friend Fiz Stape (Jenny McAlpine) because she was accused of her husband John Stape (Graeme Hawley)'s crimes. Kirsty tells Tyrone that because she is a policewoman, she can't be around people who have been in trouble with the police previously or she could lose her career. Tyrone agrees that he won't speak to Fiz again, but is still shocked because he didn't think Kirsty minded.

A week later, Tina McIntyre (Michelle Keegan) asks Tyrone if he would like to go for a curry with her as a friend only. Tyrone agrees and they leave before Kirsty arrives. When she returns, Kirsty finds Tyrone's letter explaining what they're doing. A jealous Kirsty follows Tyrone and Tina in her car, and attempts to pull them over. Tina refuses, and speeds up, and Kirsty becomes very agressive towards her car. Kirsty smashes into the back of Tina's car, leaving her unconcious. A bystander phones an ambulance and they rush them both to hospital. At the hospital, Tyrone is stunned when a nurse confirms that Kirsty's unborn baby is fine, meaning that Kirsty is pregnant with his baby. A scan reveals that Kirsty is three months pregnant, and Kirsty tells Tyrone she was afraid to tell him becuase he hasn't recovered from losing baby Jack when Molly cheated with Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell).
